What is a browser?

Your browser is what you use to view the internet. For instance, when you click on the “e” icon to navigate to a website you are using a browser. (In this example it would be Internet Explorer).

You are not limited to what browser you use on your computer. Different browsers offer different options and vary greatly when it comes to speed. There are also a multitude of privacy differences between browsers. Some browsers save a wealth of information about you and share it with all kinds of companies. Others intentionally block such information sharing from happening. Another major difference is the way browsers interpret the code on websites. What looks perfect in one browser can look very different on another.

In the final analysis, it is up to you which browser you use. The most important thing to remember is to always keep your browser up to date, and make sure you are using a quality anti-virus program when viewing the internet.

Free Internet Browsers

Internet Explorer IconInternet Explorer

Every Windows computer comes pre-installed with Internet Explorer by default. Since most people use Windows, this browser is what a lot of people view the internet with. According to Microsoft, Internet Explorer is faster than Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. They also claim that Internet Explorer blocks 99.96% of socially–engineered malware. I’ll let you judge the validity of these statements on your own.

This is not the preferred browser of any tech savvy person I know. Hopefully that will give a good indication of what I think of this particular browser.

NOTE: When navigating to the page linked above,  click on the link shown in this graphic to get the latest version. It it extremely inadvisable to use an older version unless you absolutely have to. Older versions are very susceptible to security exploits.

Get Google ChromeGoogle Chrome

My personal favorite, Google Chrome is fast and friendly. It is also able to leverage the power Google Drive, which gives you the ability to store thousands of files online without taking up space on your hard drive. Chrome conforms to proper coding standards which lets you view many websites in the way they were intended. This is something that Internet Explorer falls very short on.

Go To MozillaFirefox

Mozilla’s Firefox has been in the browser game for a long time now. Like the browsers above, it has a huge number of add-on’s available for it. The biggest problem I’ve found with Firefox is that updates force you to restart your browser, and there are a lot of updates. It seems like every time I try to use Firefox I have to wait for it to update first. That said, it’s still a favorite of many people.

Get Maxthon BrowserMaxthon

Maxthon is yet another browser that you can try. I’ve used this in the past and was impressed. Unlike the other browsers, Maxthon utilizes the “Cloud” to make their browser platform independent. In layman’s terms, it means you can use Maxthon on Windows PC, Mac, Android, iOS and Windows Phone. This is a big deal since it knocks down a lot of barriers that proprietary operating systems can introduce. Maxthon is well worth having a look at.

 Discover OperaOpera

Opera is best known as being a browser for Mac, but there are also versions which are compatible with Windows and Linux. I have Opera installed for testing purposes and find it to be a very capable and fast browser.

There are download links for the various operating systems via the link below.
